Fun with Fan Fiction

DP #57: Finish the Sentence

When I opened the door, I saw…

Add on this to this sentence, turning it into a mini piece of flash fiction. Take five minutes.

Today, you’re going to have some fun creating fan fiction. For those that don’t know, fan fiction is essentially creating a fictional story using characters already invented by someone else. They can be inspired by other books, movies, tv shows, and even video games.

The original inventors of fan fiction were the Romans, believe it or not! When they wrote their great epic, the Aeneid, they borrowed their main character (Aeneas) from the great Greek epic, the Iliad. They invented an entire fiction based around him.

So, in the tradition of our great ancestors, you’re going to try your hand at fan fiction.  Here’s the assignment:

  • Pick a movie, book, play, or tv show that you love and know well.
  • Pick a character(s) you would like to develop from it.
  • Imagine a side story for this character. It could be a story from his/her past, present, or future.
  • Write the story! Remember all of the elements a solid story should contain.

Feel free to do this with a partner.

Happy writing!
