Poetry Slam

DP #40: Poetry Is…

Write a poem in any form you wish that expresses what poetry is to you.

Write for seven minutes. Consider using some (or all) of this prompt for your writer’s reflection due Friday.

Reminder: tomorrow you will be writing your Found poems gathered from words around the school and turning them into works of art. Feel free to bring art supplies and have fun! Have them done by Monday so we can do a class share.

Today, we are doing our poetry slam! Those that are willing will read their poetry to the class. I’d also love to videotape a few to mimic the Dear Poet project we participated in.

Poetry Out Loud

Inspired by the Academy of American Poets’ “Dear Poet” project, my students and I took a chance by reading and recording our own work to celebrate the last day of National Poetry Month.  It was a wonderful way to share all of our hard work.

“Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance.” – Carl Sandburg
