Writing Opportunities

Students, check out these opportunities to move “beyond the classroom walls.”

Summer

Camp NaNoWriMo: in April and July, the creators of National Novel Writing Month offer you a place to write a novel with less restrictions. It’s a great place to network with a community of writers.

Creative Communication: this site offers both a poetry and essay writing contest with chances to submit in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. Winners are published in an anthology and the top ten winners receive cash prizes.


Fall 

National Novel Writing Month: this event happens every November and inspires you to write an entire novel in only one month.  Are you up to the challenge?

Peculiar Short Story Contest: Win a writing workshop for you and our class with Ransom Riggs (author of Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series) if your original short story is chosen. Submissions open until December 31st.

On Teaching Poem Prize: brand-new poetry contest with a large cash prize! Submissions open from October 1st – January 1st.

MSU Young Playwrights Festival: this event offers the possibility for students to win cash prizes and see their original scripts performed live by the MSU Theatre Department. Deadline: Monday, December 3rd.


Winter

Teen Ink: signing up for an account allows you to publish work on their site, get feedback from fellow writers, and also be considered for publication in their magazine.

Scholastic Book Reviews: share your book reviews with a wider audience by submitting to this site.

Writer’s Digest: this site has contest deadlines for a variety of forms of writing, including many we write in class. Check it out for cash prizes!

The Drabble: this is a WordPress site looking for short fiction and non-fiction, 100 word or less. No prizes, but it’s a great way to connect with fellow WordPress bloggers.

Poets and Writers: this site has a list of several contest opportunities. If you’ve got something you want to submit somewhere, check out this site to see if there’s a good match for it!
